"The tour was just great! The whole program, all the sights and insights, the local guides, in short the whole trip was a once in a lifetime experience. As you know this was our first trip to PNG and it exceeded our expectations".
(Robyn Kelch, ArtKelch Aboriginal Art Gallery, Freiburg - Germany)

Ecotourism Melanesia is a boutique soft adventure inbound tour operator and destination management company specialising in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and the other lesser-known countries of the South Pacific that you may not find in travel agent brochures.

Proprietor Aaron Hayes has been promoting and handling tourism in PNG and the Pacific islands for the past 25 years, specialising in well-oiled package itineraries that can be arranged at short notice as well as bespoke adventures for intrepid explorers.

Aaron and his team have an unbeatable knowledge of local culture, geography and travel logistics for planning fascinating escorted tours and independent itineraries that bring curious visitors face to face with the culturally diverse tribes and unique natural history of Papua New Guinea and its neighbours.

We don't have the most impressive website or slickest marketing videos on YouTube - we'd rather spend our time designing new and interesting tours for our clients.

Wherever we take you, we arrange quality, workable itineraries with keen attention to detail. Our friendly local guides at each destination offer professional service, local knowledge and cultural insight. And rest assured we practise responsible tourism: our tours put cash directly into the pockets of local people.

We also handle special arrangements for commercial and artistic photographers, film crews, research and medical teams, cruise ships, youth challenge expeditions, volunteer and missionary projects, VIP tourists, business reps, government and diplomatic delegations, air tours and charters, private yachts, round-the-world odyssey groups and "the weird stuff" that other tour companies won't touch.

From PNG you can extend to other South Pacific countries. Port Moresby is now the preferred gateway to the South West Pacific for Asian and European visitors. Air Niugini's overnight flights from Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai arrive early morning in Port Moresby connecting neatly with domestic flights within Papua New Guinea. After your PNG adventure Air Niugini can take you onward to Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji and from these hubs there are onward connections to New Caledonia, Nauru, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Samoa, Tonga and others. A part de Papouasie Nouvelle Guinee et les pays ci-dessus, nous faisons aussi les reservations au pays francophones du Pacifique. Nous lisons et ecrivons un peu de francais.

And yes we work with travel agents.

Ecotourism Melanesia is a boutique inbound tour operator specialising in ecotourism experiences in Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific Islands. Our aim is to encourage overseas visitors to travel to the rural areas so that more tourism dollars will go directly into the pockets of local people, giving them a viable alternative to less enviro-friendly forms of income like logging and mining. The company was established in 2003 and is privately owned by Aaron Hayes, an Australian teacher and psychologist who developed an interest in community-based ecotourism after working in the education sectors of Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea for many years and developing strong ties with local people at the village level.

With full time staff at our offices in Port Moresby and Cairns plus many part-time tour guides in the provinces, Ecotourism Melanesia is one of the better known and trusted inbound tour operators in the region ... big enough to rely on, small enough to cater to the interests of individual travellers.

We offer a range of standard and individualised eco-holiday packages for free independent travellers (FIT) and escorted tours for small groups. All our published tours are originally designed and programmed by our director over thousands of man-hours and most of the images used on our website have been taken by our staff and clients during the course of actual tours. If you find any similarly worded itineraries or tour descriptions offered by other tour companies you can be sure these have been lifted from Ecotourism Melanesia and not vice-versa.

We also provide customised arrangements for individual clients and groups with special interests (eg volcano climbers, beetle collectors) or special requirements (eg logistics for film crews, research teams, volunteer groups). In Port Moresby where we are based, we provide transfers and day trips, plus ground-handling services for other tour operators, visiting cruise ships and groups travelling by private charter aircraft. From our Port Moresby office our tour coordinators monitor your tour arrangements on a daily basis to ensure that everything proceeds as smoothly as possible, and we provide 24-hour telephone support in case of any problems arising. And rest assured we carry public liability insurance.

In accordance with our aim to support community-based tourism, we try to include at least one overnight or day trip to a village or other rural attraction operated by local people in each of our tour packages. This enables us to contribute in a systematic way to the rural economy, encouraging village dwellers to develop a sustainable livelihood in their home areas, where they can draw on the plentiful resources of the land and sea for their food, building materials etc, rather than migrating to urban areas like Port Moresby where high unemployment and poverty are prevalent.
